Bone marrow studies involve the examination and analysis of bone marrow tissue to diagnose and monitor various medical conditions, including blood disorders, cancers, and certain non-hematological disorders. The bone marrow, the soft and spongy tissue found within the cavities of bones, is a key component of the human hematopoietic system responsible for the production of blood cells.

Here's a brief overview of bone marrow studies:

  • Purpose: Bone marrow studies are performed to diagnose and evaluate a range of conditions, including anemias, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloproliferative disorders, myelodysplastic syndromes, and certain non-hematological disorders like metastatic cancer.
  • Sample Collection: The primary bone marrow study involves the collection of a bone marrow sample, typically from the posterior iliac crest (hip bone) or the sternum (breastbone) using a needle. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, and a small amount of marrow is aspirated or extracted.
  • Bone Marrow Aspiration: The collected bone marrow is evaluated through bone marrow aspiration, which involves the extraction of liquid marrow from the bone. This liquid portion is essential for assessing cellularity and identifying abnormalities in the blood-forming cells.
  • Bone Marrow Biopsy: In addition to aspiration, a bone marrow biopsy may be performed. A larger sample of bone marrow tissue is extracted and evaluated for cellularity, structural abnormalities, and disorders that may affect the marrow's architecture.
  • Genetic and Molecular Testing: Genetic and molecular testing may be performed on bone marrow samples to identify specific gene mutations and chromosomal abnormalities associated with various blood disorders.
